GEORGETOWN - The Penang International Food Festival 2019 (PIFF 2019) returns in April, serving up a variety of the state’s most famous food and beverages as well as unique dining concepts around the island and peninsular.

This festival has been described as “gastronomic tourism” by Penang EXCO for Tourism Development, Arts, Culture & Heritage (PETACH), YB Yeoh Sooh Hin. Not only Penang is promoted as the culinary capital of the country but also as a food paradise in Asia.

“The opening weekend of PIFF saw over 180,000 people gathering in Beach Street for the Penang Street Food Festival,” he said.

The festival aims to celebrate the diversity of delicacies worldwide while showcasing the authenticity of local food found in the Pearl of the Orient.

Starting off the festival with a bang is the Street Food Festival, where more than 100 of Penang’s street food vendors gather for a parade of local delicacies. The Street Food Festival took place in Beach Street, filled with veterans cooking up multicultural all-time favourites including Char Koay Teow, Asam Laksa, Nasi Kandar, and more. Highlights from the Street Food Festival are Balik Pulau cuisine, funfairs, photo booths, Street Burger Corner, cooking demonstrations, live performances from different ethnicities, and fireworks display.

According to the organiser, TLM Event Sdn Bhd, food vendors were called to join the world-class event. Hawkers, cafes, hotels, and restaurants sent in their proposals according to the themes and participated in the 16-days food festival.

Visitors from Malaysia and countries afar are treated to hundreds of variation of hawker food from Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures.
