KUALA LUMPUR - TEDxUniversityofMalaya has organised their annual TEDx talk event in Asia-Europe Institute, University of Malaya yesterday.
TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Speakers are required to give a short talk based on the given theme.
“For the year 2019, the theme is ‘Illuminate’. Just like the word itself, we aim to illuminate or lighten up the minds of our local community through our TEDx talks.” Chan Kai Zhe, the director of TEDxUniversityofMalaya organising team said.
With nine speakers coming from a wide range of fields, the event was attended by 120 attendees consisting of both members of the public and students of University of Malaya.
The speakers are Professor Shad Saleem Faruqi, Dr. Adelina Asmawi, Dr. Shirin Shafie, Marta Kondryn, Alsu Kashapova, Dr. Alwyn Lau, Wesley Chan, Sina Meraji and Nazli Ebrahimi.
“This is a great platform for the community to share their ideas. It is definitely a new, refreshing experience for me.” Professor Shad, the holder of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Chair of University of Malaya said whose talk was about the Malaysian Constitution.
“I hope that through my talk in TEDxUniversityofMalaya, more people will be aware about the importance of the social environment factor in shaping women’s growth, particularly the decisions they make.” said Nazli Ebrahimi who shared her 20 years of experiences in women’s empowerment field during her TEDx talk.

Nadhrah Athirah Johan, a student of University of Malaya has been attending TEDxUniversityofMalaya event since 2018. “This is my second time here. The speakers are really interesting and inspiring. This is a recommended event for students to attend.” she said.
“I brought my two kids, age 12 and 14 to attend this TEDx talk. Surprisingly, my kids really enjoyed listening to the speakers throughout the whole event. I like the content of the TEDx talk, they cover on eye-opening issues and are educational.” Wong Ee Wai, a mother of two said.
TEDxUniversityofMalaya 2019 ended at 5.30 pm with a performance by Y Major, a local band consisting of students of University of Malaya. The organising team would like to thank everyone for supporting the event and they hope there will be an increase in student participation next year.
TEDxUniversityofMalaya was established in 2017 by students of University of Malaya themselves in efforts to create a community of sharing inspiring ideas in the university as well as providing an opportunity to the local community especially students to experience attending a TEDx talk.
